Roughing by Jami Davenport

Synopsis:

I'm the star defensemen for the Portland Icehawks and the guy everyone loves to hate. Not that I don’t deserve their hatred. After all, how can you like a guy who doesn't even like himself?

Michella is the one woman I can't let go, yet I can't be with her either. We're like a drug to each other, and addictions aren't a good thing. I've messed up a relationship before and destroyed the one person I loved. I can't do the same to Michella. I'm ready to walk away one final time when a child of the street in need of rescuing forces us back together.

To make matters worse, Michella's new job with a private investigative agency puts her in the crosshairs of Portland's elusive serial killer. I have to protect her and this child, even if staying causes more destruction than leaving.

Review:

Briggs doesn't want to play for the Portland Icehawks, he doesn't want to make friends, he only is interested in the beautiful Michella, but nobody can be an island in this world and sooner or later he has to take some steps towards his team and prove his real value as a hockey player and as a man. Michella is starting a new job as a PI's assistant, she wants to show how serious she is at work, proving this is her career. They live in the same building and they have a fling, until they understand there is something more between them. Will they ruin everything being stubborn or will they open themselves to the other?

Briggs and Michella's relationship is complicated, but they have amazing chemistry. It was a little unnerving waiting for them to get their act together, and embrace their true feelings for each other without being scaried.

The story is skillfully written, the plot is well thought and the pace flows well.

I recommend you pick up Roughing, but it's even better if you give it a try to the whole series.
