The American Woman by R J Gould

Synopsis:

When it’s impossible to forget is it possible to forgive?

Jennifer is stuck doing dead end waitressing jobs, her naïve dream of Hollywood stardom in tatters. Gareth, an IT consultant on a temporary contract, is the unlikely customer at Giulio’s Diner in the downbeat part of Los Angeles where she is now working.

It shouldn’t be a perfect match, the attractive, outgoing waitress from Idaho and the shy, good looker from Wales, but when it comes to relationships nothing is predictable, is it?

They move from state to state and when Gareth’s work in America dries up Jennifer follows him to Britain. Everything changes. What is she supposed to do when she discovers that she’s been fed a pack of lies?

Now living alone in London, Jennifer is a regular at the popular Dream Café with a great job and a lovely set of friends, but it’s impossible to cast aside the wonderful memories of her time together with Gareth.

Were his lies justified? Are they forgivable? And most importantly, should she be giving Gareth the second chance he so desperately wants?

Review:

The American Woman doesn't have an "in your face" bright cover, but the story between the pages has pleasantly surprised me.

R J Gould writing style is clear and easy, so the reader feels completely engrossed in the book. Even the jumps in time, past and present, don't affect the nice pace of the story.

Jennifer dreamt to become an Hollywood star, unfortunately when she moved from Idaho to Los Ageles she didn't expect all the hardships she encountered. When her dreams were almost all shattered, she meets a nice guy and she decides to follow him back to Britain when his work calls him back. Things doesn't go too well on the other side of the ocean and Jennifer decides to leave Gareth, to roll up her sleeves and to start again in a foreign country.

I really liked our heroine. Jennifer is a tough, tenacious woman. She is believable and relatable.
We follow her through her ups and downs, I understand her fears and her moments of discouragement, but I've appreciated how she addressed them, never giving up.
I loved the friendship that bloomed between her and the Dream Cafè ladies, and I appreciated how they all come together to let Jennifer feel welcome.

This was the first time I've read a novel by this author and I've really enjoyed it, so I would happily recommend to all.
